Approach to Colregs and Aids to Navigation

Norman Martin will lead a seminar and discussion about the Rules of the Road on March 10 beginning at 1900 hours in the Minehan Room at the Marriott Residence Inn on Tudor Wharf.

The book, Navigation Rules, International - Inland is a daunting 220 page publication. The yachtsman typically looks at the book and thinks learning the rules is an impossible task. It is not. The Rules are clear but not always properly applied. Examples on Boston Harbor abound. After this, we can hope that CYC sailors will be in compliance. The lights, shapes, whistle signals specified are arranged in an orderly way. Norman will explain how to interpret the various signals. Even without a copy of the Navigation Rules in hand, it is possible to derive the meaning of a signal.

The subject also leads to a brief review of chart symbols and Chart One. Charting and the use of waterways is part of the Rules. The following reference books will be used:

Navigation Rules, International - Inland
Eldridge Tide and Pilot 2010
Chart One
Training Chart number 1210Tr
NOAA Chart number 13218
Racing Rules of Sailing

Attendees should bring “stump-the-presenter” questions.

Question: You are ahead of a vessel showing a triangular arrangement of black balls. What is the correct action for you to take?

Answer: Come to the Seminar on the 10th of March.

Please email Ron at ronpski@rcn.com to sign up for this event.

Marine Diesel Engine seminar

Again this year, the Constitution Yacht Club teams up with Hansen Marine Engineering in Marblehead to offer an all-day Marine Diesel Engine seminar designed to educate boat owners who’d like to learn more about their engines.

These successful and helpful classes cover both the electrical and mechanical aspects of engines. They are lectures with the morning session addressing diesel theory and troubleshooting in the classroom while the class moves into the shop for the afternoon segment. Note this is not a hands-on course.

Last year this event was well attended and received enthusiastic reviews by those who attended. This year’s seminar will be offered twice, on Saturday, April 3rd and on Saturday, May 29th at the Hansen Marine facility in Marblehead.

• A “boat owners” diesel engine seminar.
• Focus tends to be on Perkins and Westerbeke engines though it’s realized that not all have those types. Those signing up for the seminar should indicate the type engine they have.
• Class size will be limited to 25 people.
• Cost is $175 each.
• Coffee, donuts, and sandwiches for lunch are provided.

Please contact Ron at ronpski@rcn.com to sign up or to pose any questions you may have.

Please stay tuned for further information on the above events
as well as additional events to be announced shortly!
