Fleet Captain's Welcome
The 2009 racing season nearly upon
us! As you know we will be starting this season off with the arrival of the
Volvo Ocean Race fleet on or around April 27th. In conjunction with
the VOR Fan Pier organizers we are sponsoring a Wednesday Evening format race on
May 13th, all yachts with a PHRF certificate are welcome. This
promises to be a great event and a dynamic start to our racing season. Following
this race we will begin our normal Wednesday Evening racing on May 20th.
There have been some modifications to the sailing instructions so please review
them carefully.
I would like to encourage our racers
to abide by Racing Rules 14 and 44.1 regarding racer to racer collisions. I am
sure that we all appreciate the competitive edge of this sport, and this can be
maintained, but it must be coupled with sportsmanship and respect for our fellow
racers. As everyone is aware, we share Boston Harbor with quite a bit of
traffic, some of which are other recreational boaters. Skippers should be
forward thinking tactically and take into consideration that these pleasure
boaters are not racers and should be treated with respect as members of the
greater boating community.
As a club, I would like to encourage
the fleet to be proactive in discussing more weekend race participation. As a
team, CYC has shown that it can be competitive with neighboring yacht clubs,
this was represented last year with a team trophy awarded to CYC in the BHIR. We
had great attendance from neighboring yacht clubs at our Spring and Fall
Regattas, it would be great to see a greater number of our Wednesday Evening
racers on the line this year.
