Robert "Bob" Hartl was a past Commodore, Corresponding Secretary, and the first Webmaster of Constitution Yacht Club. After a distinguished career in psychology — including two years in the Peace Corps in Brazil — Bob followed his passion to the waterfront in 1995, becoming a yacht broker at Bay Yacht Brokerage in Charlestown and a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain.

At CYC, Bob helped shape the club into what it is today. He was instrumental in developing the racing program and many of the regattas on Boston Harbor, including the annual Frostbite Race held each January. He never missed a Wednesday night race. With his office at Constitution Marina overlooking the harbor, Bob poured himself into the club — its racing, its people, and its future. Alongside Bill Matthews, he helped a small club of 75 sailors without a clubhouse look and act like a bigger, well-run organization.

Those who knew Bob knew his spontaneous wit and his positively contagious laughter. He always had a kind word and a helping hand for anyone he met. Bob passed away on September 30, 2011. Per his wishes, his ashes were scattered at sea.

The CYC Memorial Regatta honors Bob's legacy and the legacy of all CYC members who are no longer with us on the water — but whose spirit continues to shape everything we do at Constitution Yacht Club. This race is for them.

The CYC Memorial Regatta is an open regatta co-hosted by Constitution Yacht Club and Savin Hill Yacht Club. You do not need to be a member of either club to participate. Any boat with a current ORR-EZ certificate is welcome. Whether you're a Wednesday Night Racing regular or joining us for the first time, come race on Boston Harbor.
